Most days, I’m not positive there’s such a thing as universal justice, karma, whatever you want to call it. But some days, I hear a story of payback so perfect, it just feels divine. One Redditor took to the Legal Advice forum with a unique problem that makes me wonder if karma actually is real.

The fake “Permit Parking Only” sign leads to a ticket

The driver in question was struggling with a very real problem. “My apartment is close to a few good bars, so often after work it’s hard to find a spot.” Anyone who’s lived in a city can sympathize. So what did this real driver do about their real problem? A fake solution, of course.

“I mocked up a fake ‘Permit Parking Only’ sign.” Some pasteboard and a Sharpie, and this one downtown resident suddenly had their very own designated parking. Illegally.

But the universe clapped back when the driver stepped out of line. “It worked really well until I woke up to a parking ticket for not having a permit.” All I can think is that a parking enforcement officer saw the fake sign, was convinced, and didn’t check whether or not the zone actually required a permit before issuing the ticket.

The driver turned to Reddit for advice. The best argument for quietly paying the ticket was, “I’m thinking the fines you would get for putting up the fake sign are way more than the one you got for the ticket.”

One commenter nailed it when they said, “You put up a fake sign and didn’t think to make yourself a fake permit to display on the dash? Pay the fine, out of principle.” You can see the original post and all its hilariously snarky comments embedded below:

[DE] Put up a fake “Permit Parking Only” sign so I could park in front on my apartment easier, but got a real ticket.
