For some people, silly, stupid decisions snowball. They gain some momentum, gather their fellow bad decisions, and turn into news-worthy shenanigans. It’s certainly the case when a driver thinks a high-speed chase with police on a deflating tire after police found him sleeping in his car on public streets.
A drunk driver admitted that a high-speed chase following his brazen escape attempt was ‘stupid’
Let’s face it. A left turn lane is a pretty poor place to ‘sleep one off’. Well, that didn’t occur to a 25-year-old driver in Raytown, Missouri. The young man was fast asleep in his red 2015 GMC Terrain with his foot on the brake at a little after 4:00 a.m. Police officers pulled up behind the stationary SUV and approached the vehicle.
According to KCTV 5, the police officers observed the driver sleeping in his SUV. He was reportedly “slumped forward with his head facing down.” As you might imagine, though, bright lights and cops were enough to summon the drunk driver from his slumber. The police officers talking to the driver recalled that he had “glassy, bloodshot eyes.” Although he clearly wasn’t finished partying; officers saw a cup in the SUV’s beverage holder. But the driver claims it was “caffeine.”
As the cops on the scene talked to the driver, another officer approached and placed a “piranha-style” tire deflation device (TDD) on his rear passenger tire. After a police officer asked him for his license, he put the GMC SUV in reverse and crashed into a patrol vehicle. From there, the bad decisions compounded. He fled on his deflating rear tire, starting a high-speed chase.
Police chased the driver as he exceeded a 45-mph speed limit by as much as 35. At his fastest, the fleeing drunk driver hit 93 mph, faster than any speed limit in the United States. Unfortunately for the criminal, he clipped a guardrail and crashed.
Police arrested the GMC’s driver and held him before emergency medical services (EMS) rendered aid. While searching the vehicle, cops found multiple alcoholic beverages. After the fact, the driver mentioned to authorities that “he really messed up,” and that he was afraid of a DUI charge because he was “too drunk to drive.” Now, however, he’s looking at charges for his high-speed chase debacle. Interestingly, he reportedly said “Man, that was stupid,” of the silliness.
